UX DESIGN • Prototyping
An app that picks movies based on your moods and preferences
Roles & Responsibilities
User Research & Design: Phuong Van
Development: Vulli Mahavadi
Project Context
Feb 18/22 – Feb 19/22 Hackathon Project
Hackathon
This was the first hackathon I ever attended and it was also the first project I ever made on Figma. It was a 24-hours hackathon called Pearl Hacks and I was tasked with the research and designs for the mobile app. During the design phase, I developed high-fidelity mockups that ultimately led to the prototype application.
Problem
According to Deloitte Insights, 49% of people get frustrated if an entertainment service failed to provide them with good recommendations. This may lead them to stop using the service altogether.
“How might we help individuals to find better movie recommendations?”
User Research
I interviewed three university students and asked about their impressions of the mobile apps Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Peacock. I also asked about their genre preferences and what features they would like to see in movie apps.
Research Insights
User Story 1: Yasmeen
-
When they’re stressed, they tend to watch action movies
-
Happy: rom-coms and comedy
-
Sad: dramas
-
Hate Peacock for being too cluttered and having too many colors
-
Love Netflix the most for the sleek design and easy to navigate interface
-
Like Amazon Prime because they have movies that other apps don’t have
-
Asked for popular movies from different genres
-
Asked for a button of saying I don't like a specific movie or genre today
User Story 2: Vulli
-
Stressed: easygoing, mostly comedy
-
Happy: fantasy, sci-fi, not realistic movies
-
Sad: sad movies
-
Like Netflix for its clean & neat design
-
Like Amazon Prime for the easy to use interface and has more movie recommendations
-
Like Peacock the most because you don’t need a subscription (it’s an ad-based service)
User Story 3: Sonali
-
Didn’t find anything to watch because it was too boring
-
Look at the description, preview, reviews before choosing a movie
-
Thought Netflix had too many categories and they felt overwhelmed by it
-
Wouldn’t use Amazon Prime again because they did not recognize half of the movies there
-
Like Peacock the most because the design was easier to navigate
Features
This application’s features compare to the Netflix and Peacock app, however, it also includes a system of selecting genre preferences according to the user’s moods.
-
Onboarding — Introducing the users to the app & letting them to choose to continue as guests, sign up, or log in
-
Customizations — Allowing users to personalize their preferences
-
Block Button — Block movies that users don’t want to see in a day or forever
Wireframes
I created hi-fi prototypes to layout our features prior to creating the app.
Here is the design-focused layout of our application, as well as buttons that lead you to our prototypes
Mistakes
-
I didn’t have time to make personas and lo-fi wireframes because I was rushed to make the designs for the developer
-
My team also did not have time for the usability tests because we spent 24 hours designing and developing the app
Further Development
-
Make algorithms look at the genre patterns so the movie picks will be more tailored to the users
-
Implement more moods (ex. angry, hyper, nervous)
-
Adding a community interface that allows people to share their movie recommendations with other people
